Now that we are into spring, more of us will be walking and running outdoors for longer periods of time. For some, this may lead to the formation of friction blisters, particularly for runners, hikers etc. Whether they are painful or painless, they are still important to treat. A blister is a small sac of fluid that forms in the upper skin layers in a particular location of the foot where excessive friction is present or an injury has occurred. It may also develop due to infection, allergies, burns, insect bites and many other causes.
Generalised predisposing factors to friction blisters of the foot include but not limited to: poor fitting footwear, foot deformities eg. bunions, prominent bones/joints, moisture from sweating, increased temperature within the shoe/sock, prolonged and vigorous exercise, new shoes, inappropriate socks, hard/rough materials of the shoe, biomechanics eg. a particular way of walking, particular foot type. 16/1/2022 Cold FeetThe coldest winter is here with us and feet typically require more care as of summer feet. With exposure to the cold that slows down and constricts the blood circulation and vessels to the extremities as our body attempts to preserve temperature in the core, and this can exacerbate the symptoms of those who already have circulation issues such as diabetes, chronic vascular insufficiency and neuropathy.
Hence due to these reasons and the winter cold temperature weakens our feet, specifically nails, skins and joints which become susceptible to being damaged. Chilblain, frostbite, raynaud's syndrome, fungal and dry or cracked nails and feet are the commonly seen symptoms in Solacehealthcare podiatry. Good foot health maintenance such as cardio movements, warm socks, well insulated footwear, regular warm foot bath, keep feet dry, applying moisturizer, use of heat pads and routined Podiatry visits are essential to avoid common winter complaints and complications. |
